Ever come home after a long day in the sun, your skin feeling warm, sensitive and feeling it needs something calming and nourishing?
This DIY Centella Asiatica after-sun cream is exactly what your sun-stressed skin dreams of. Imagine a cream so velvety-rich yet quickly absorbed, that feels like a comforting lullaby without being too greasy. That's precisely what we're crafting together today, something your skin will thank you for, again and again.
This luxurious homemade cream deeply hydrates, repairs UV damage, prevents peeling and fights photoaging by boosting collagen synthesis overnight. The secret? Centella Asiatica, a very interesting and effective skincare ingredient known as Gotu Kola or Cica, especially loved in Korean beauty rituals.
Why Centella Asiatica for After-Sun Care?
Centella Asiatica is your skin's best ally after sun exposure. Rich in compounds that soothe, heal and repair your skin's barrier, it stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. It helps prevent premature aging and repairing sun-induced damage. I specifically chose a hydroglycerin extract (50% water, 50% glycerin) as it is gentler and more hydrating for sun-stressed skin compared to alcohol-based extracts. You can easily make your own following my detailed recipe here.
The Beauty of the Texture
My ideal after-sun cream is both effective and sensorially delightful. It’s thick and luscious, providing deep comfort when you dip your finger into it, and it absorbs gracefully without the heaviness often experienced with rich creams. This delicate balance is mainly due to the careful selection of the emulsifier: Xyliance, that has a silky and dry finish. If you substitute it with Olivem 1000, the cream will feel slightly greasier.
Selecting the Right Oils
Each oil has been thoughtfully picked to enhance recovery and nourishment:
- Macadamia Oil: Rich in palmitoleic acid, it regenerates your skin's natural barrier and gives a soft, silky feeling that improves the cream’s sensorial experience.
- Sesame Oil: A hidden gem in soothing skincare, sesame oil contains sesamin, which helps reduce irritation, redness and inflammation by calming pro-inflammatory cytokines. It’s also a potent antioxidant, fighting the signs of aging from sun exposure.
- Jojoba Oil: Mimicking human sebum, it gently soothes and softens without clogging pores.
- Fractionated Coconut Oil with Ceramides III: This special version helps repair and strengthen your skin's protective barrier. Ceramides restore skin barrier, providing noticeable comfort. You can create your own with my recipe or opt for regular fractionated coconut oil, that has a lovely and professional light feeling.
- Cupuacu Butter: Did you know it can hold up to 240% of its weight in water? This incredible hydration booster also provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, ideal for counteracting the oxidative stress from sun exposure. Its creamy texture contributes significantly to the delightful and thick consistency of the final cream.
Extra Actives for Maximum Healing
To boost the regenerative power of this cream, I've included:
- Bisabolol: known for soothing inflammation and promoting healing.
- Panthenol: deeply moisturizing and accelerating skin barrier recovery.
Essential Oils: Healing with Aroma
To complement the restorative effects, I carefully blended essential oils of patchouli, palmarosa, rosewood, and amyris. Together, they create a warm, woody, comforting scent while enhancing the cream's soothing and regenerative properties.

Substitutions, Notes & Tips
- If Xyliance isn't available, substitute with Olivem 1000, noting the cream will be slightly greasier.
- You can replace the oils with others that have similar properties (check this chart).
- Cupuacu butter can be replaced with mango or shea butter, however, the hydration levels will differ slightly.
- Guar gum improves the spreadability and has an impact on the lovely texture and thickness of this cream. You can use xanthan gum only, but you’ll get a slightly different result.
- Don’t confuse betaine with coco-betaine, the surfactant: they’re entirely different! This betaine is a wonderful humectant that enhances hydration and leaves a beautiful feel on the skin. I especially love pairing it with Xyliance to soften that slightly dry, waxy finish it can sometimes give. You can leave it out (just increase the water to compensate), but I really encourage you to try it as it makes a lovely difference.
- Cetearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol (not drying at all!) that helps stabilize the emulsion and gives the cream a smoother, creamier texture. I use just a touch here to soften the structure and make the cream feel more luxurious on the skin. You can omit it if needed, or replace it with cetyl alcohol. Just keep in mind that the texture might turn out a bit less velvety without it.
