DIY Prebiotic Hydrating Toner Recipe

This natural, crystal-clear beauty mist goes beyond a simple toner: it’s a delicate, hydrating formula that cares for the skin’s microbiome and is as rich as a serum.

A prebiotic and postbiotic leave-on treatment, light as morning dew and enriched with actives that soothe, moisturize, and restore skin balance.

What is a prebiotic cosmetic?

A prebiotic cosmetic formula is designed to feed and support the skin’s natural microbiome by nourishing beneficial bacteria instead of adding live ones.

Prebiotics, usually plant-derived oligosaccharides or sugars, act as gentle nourishment for the skin’s good bacteria, helping them stay balanced and healthy while limiting the growth of unwanted microorganisms. It keeps the skin’s natural ecosystem healthy and stable.

Topical prebiotics can enhance hydration, calm redness, support barrier repair and help rebalance skin that has become dry, sensitive, or reactive after excessive or harsh cleansing.
They also help with impurities and occasional breakouts by supporting a healthier microbial balance on the surface.

Why not probiotics (live bacteria)?

Although “probiotic” is often used in marketing, most cosmetics don’t actually contain live bacteria.
Instead, they contain lysates, ferments or postbiotics, sterile extracts obtained from fermentation. These contain peptides, metabolites and beneficial molecules derived from bacteria, offering soothing and skin-defense–supporting properties without the preservation challenges of live microbes.

For this formula I selected Pro Biocin V (Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate), a beautifully balanced postbiotic proven to significantly increase hydration, reduce redness, calm irritation, soothe eczema and reinforce the skin barrier, while also offering an antimicrobial action that helps preservation.

Focus on the Hero Trio of this Prebiotic Toner Formula

1. Pro Biocin V — the postbiotic warrior
INCI: Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate
At 2–4%, this lysate provides barrier support, soothing and antimicrobial peptides that make the skin feel calmer and hydrated

While Pro Biocin V helps preserve the formula, I always combine it with a secondary gentle preservative to ensure full safety.

As a side note, it can be used as the sole preservative at 5% in very simple formulas — for example, those made only with a hydrosol and a few actives that are not prone to microbial growth — but it’s generally safer to pair it with another one. My favorite combination is with Dermosoft 1388.

2. Dermosoft® 1388 ECO — the gentle guardian
INCI: Glycerin, Aqua, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Anisate
A gentle plant-based preservative blend that doubles as a skin-conditioning agent. It complements postbiotics perfectly and keeps the rose hydrosol’s scent clean and delicate thanks to its neutral scent.

3. Inulin — the real prebiotic sugar
Derived from chicory root, inulin nourishes beneficial bacteria and enhances hydration. Used at 1–2%, it’s a great microbiome ally. Also, it provides a soft conditioning effect and a silky afterfeel that makes the toner gentle and pleasant, unlike many traditional toners that can feel harsh or drying.

The Supporting Ingredients

  • Rose hydrosol — a soothing floral base that comforts and refreshes, adding a lovely scent.

  • Fucocert (Biosaccharide Gum-1) — adds a silky glide, long-lasting hydration and a soft protective film.

  • Glycerin + Sodium Hyaluronate — humectant duo for lasting softness.

  • Niacinamide (4%) — strengthens the barrier, balances sebum, improves skin texture, boosts collagen production and calms the skin.

  • Sodium lactate + lactic acid — optional, but together they create a mild buffer that helps keep the pH stable, especially recommended when using ingredients like niacinamide, which should stay at a pH above 5.

The Sensory Experience

This prebiotic toner leaves the skin silky, hydrated and refreshed — nothing like those harsh toners that dry the skin.

The combination of Fucocert, glycerin, inulin and hyaluronic acid creates a subtle, velvety touch, while rose hydrosol adds a soft, comforting scent reminiscent of a freshly opened bloom. Among the many varieties of rose waters, my favorite is Rosa damascena, with its powdery and elegant notes.

Every drop of this prebiotic toner feels like morning light on your skin — light, gentle and alive.

Ingredients of the Prebiotic Toner

  • Rose hydrosol: 40 g (40.0%)

  • Distilled water: 42.8 g (42.8%)

  • Fucocert (Biosaccharide Gum-1): 1 g (1.0%)

  • Sodium lactate: 2 g (2.0%)

  • Glycerin: 2 g (2.0%)

  • Sodium hyaluronate (powder): 0.2 g (0.2%)

  • Pro Biocin V: 4 g (4.0%)

  • Inulin: 2 g (2.0%)

  • Niacinamide: 4 g (4.0%)

  • Dermosoft 1388 ECO: 2 g (2.0%)

  • Lactic acid: q.s. (to adjust pH)

🧪 Method

  1. Combine rose hydrosol + distilled water and mix gently.

  2. Add sodium lactate, then adjust pH to ≈ 5.5 with lactic acid (this creates your gentle buffer).

  3. Add inulin, stir until clear.

  4. Disperse hyaluronic acid in glycerin, then add to the main beaker; allow to hydrate 10–30 minutes.

  5. Add Fucocert, Pro Biocin V, and Dermosoft 1388, mixing slowly.

  6. Check pH again (should be around 5.5) and add niacinamide last.

  7. Your prebiotic toner is ready! Bottle in sanitized containers.

  8. It's suggested to test the pH again the following day and adjust if needed.

How to Use the Prebiotic Toner

Apply your prebiotic tomer morning and evening after cleansing. Mist or pat onto the skin, then follow with your cream or face oil.

Notes & Customization

  • You can replace rose hydrosol with chamomile or lavender for a different aromatic mood. Witch hazel is especially good for acne prone skin.

  • Skip inulin if you prefer a simpler formula or add and replace other hydrosoluble actives that fit your needs.

  • Always ensure your final pH ≈ 5.5 for niacinamide stability and microbiome harmony.

  • Dermosoft 1388 can be replaced with Cosgard (Dehydroacetic Acid + Benzyl Alcohol) or other similar preservatives, but here I prioritized softness and minimal scent interference.

  • To keep the prebiotix toner crystal-clear (enhancing its sense of purity), stable and low in bioload (especially since it uses milder preservatives than Cosgard) I avoided aloe and raw botanical extracts that could increase microbial risk or add color. Inulin already provides a gentle nutritive boost, so it’s important not to overload the composition.
